History of the house PDF Print E-mail

This house a long history. Cavements date back to the 13th century; roman pillars and arches are testimonies of a time long past.

Back in 1525 this building housed The Golden Sword Inn.

In 1735 printer-polyglot Jan De Meyer lived here. He knew Dutch, and Latin, Italian, Spanish, German, English and French. De printing-busines was here till the end of the 19th century.

In 1917 the house was donated to the Convent ‘Zusters van Visitatie’. Classes of a householdschool were installed. Later in the twenthieth century, the priest to the convent and principal of the school lived here. To some in the street our house is still known as the presbytery. More of history can be seen by your own eyes.
